Biografia
Niezwykle przystojny aktor, scenarzysta, reżyser i producent. W czasie II wojny światowej służył jako radiotelegrafista w Navy Air Corp. W latach 1951-1952 uczęszczał do Yale, pracując jednocześnie w nowojorskiej telewizji i ucząc się w Studium Aktorskim. Przyciągnął uwagę krytyków debiutem na Broadwayu w "Picnicu" (1953). Po raz pierwszy pojawił się na dużym ekranie w "Srebrnym kielichu", ciekawym epizodzie biblijnym. Jednakże pozytywne recenzje otrzymał dopiero za rolę boksera Rocky'ego Graziano w filmie "Między liniami ringu". Kilka jego wczesnych ról w filmach: "Kotka na gorącym, blaszanym dachu", "Długie, gorące lato" i "Słodki ptak młodości" zapewniło mu image niestabilnego, cynicznego, zbuntowanego oportunisty, którego seksapil równoważony jest otwartą pogardą dla kobiet. W roku 1969 założył wraz z Sidney'em Poitier, Barbrą Streisand, Stevem McQueneem i kilkoma innymi gwiazdami, studio produkcyjne, First Artists. Debiut reżyserski Newmana, "Rachelo, Rachelo" przyniósł mu nagrodę dla najlepszego reżysera, przyznaną przez Koło Nowojorskich Krytyków Filmowych. Newman nadal odnosił sukcesy występując przed kamerą, wraz z Robertem Redfordem w "Butch Cassidy i Sundance Kid" oraz "Żądle". Późne lata siedemdziesiąte obfitowały w odważne projekty filmowe, np. "Buffalo Bill i Indianie", futurystyczna saga "Kwintet", "Na lodzie" i niekomercyjny "Basen topielców". W latach 80. i 90. Newman odtwarzał role starszych osób, zaś jego styl gry dojrzał, nabierając pewnego ascetyzmu. Wystąpił m.in. w "Bez złej woli", "Mr. & Mrs. Bridge" i "Werdykcie", gdzie zagrał alkoholika oraz w "Hudsucker Proxy". Jego wyjątkowa pozycja w świecie filmu została potwierdzona honorową Nagrodą Akademii w roku 1985 i Oskarem dla najlepszego aktora za "Kolor pieniędzy" Martina Scorsese. 26 września 2008 roku aktor zmarł w swoim domu. Miał 83 lata.
