Biografia
W 1969 roku został zaproszony do Prospect Theatre Company, aby zagrać główne role w Richard II Szekspira i Edwardzie II Marlowe'a. W latach 70. McKellen stał się filarem Royal Shakespeare Company i National Theatre of Great Britain. Zdobył pięć nagród Olivier Awards za role w Pillars of the Community (1977), The Alchemist (1978), Bent (1979), Wild Honey (1984) i Richard III (1995). McKellen zadebiutował na Broadwayu w The Promise (1965). Powrócił na Broadway w Wild Honey (1986), Dance of Death (1990), No Man's Land (2013) i Waiting for Godot (2013), przy czym te dwa ostatnie były wspólną produkcją z Patrickiem Stewartem. McKellen zyskał światową sławę dzięki rolom filmowym, w tym tytułowemu Królowi w Ryszardzie III (1995), Jamesowi Whale'owi w Bogowie i potwory (1998), Magneto w filmach X-Men, Trybikowi w Pięknej i Bestii (2017) i Gandalfowi w trylogiach Władca Pierścieni (2001–2003) i Hobbit (2012–2014).
